Ultra-short-throw projectors fire light upward from very close to the wall. That geometry is why a UST-specific ALR screen is not just a darker gray version of a normal projector screen: its optical structure is designed around the steep incoming light angle.
How a UST ALR screen works
Lenticular UST surfaces are often explained as microscopic horizontal structures that accept light arriving from below and direct it toward viewers while absorbing or redirecting light arriving from other directions. That is the core idea behind NothingProjector’s Classic PET Crystal design and many competing CLR/ALR surfaces.
ALR does not mean “immune to daylight”
Ambient-light rejection is directional, not magical. Direct sunlight striking the image area can still overwhelm a projected image. Ceiling light, side light, wall color, projector brightness and screen gain all interact. A dark-room projector with limited light output will not become a sunlight TV simply because the screen has an ALR label.
Lenticular versus Fresnel
Lenticular UST screens generally emphasize a wide horizontal viewing area, while Fresnel screens use a concentric optical structure that can increase on-axis brightness and reject light from more directions at the cost of a narrower useful viewing cone. AWOL’s current 120-inch daylight Fresnel screen, for example, publishes 1.2 gain and a 90° viewing angle, compared with the Classic’s 0.6 gain and 160° angle.

Is any ALR screen compatible with a UST projector?
