A white wall is the simplest projection surface: it costs nothing extra and can work in a dark room if the wall is flat, smooth and neutral. A UST ALR screen exists to solve the problems that become more obvious when room light and steep projection geometry enter the picture.

Why UST makes wall flatness especially important
A UST projector sits close to the wall and throws the image upward at a steep angle. Small surface waves can become visible as geometry distortion because the light is arriving at that angle rather than nearly perpendicular to the wall.
When the wall still makes sense
Use the wall while you validate projector placement, image size and seating distance. If you mostly watch at night in a dark room and the wall is unusually flat, you may decide the improvement from a specialist screen is not urgent. The screen becomes more compelling as room light and wall imperfections become more noticeable.

Yes, but wall texture, flatness and room light can reduce image uniformity and contrast. A purpose-built UST ALR screen addresses different problems than a plain painted wall.
Does ALR always look better in a dark room?
Not automatically. In a fully controlled dark room, screen gain, color neutrality, projector calibration and personal preference still matter.
